Stay safe and have a happy Halloween

Not everyone enjoys or wants to take part in Halloween. If you would rather not have trick or treaters call at your home, you can download Kent Police’s ‘no trick or treat’ sign for your front door or window.

If you have young children:

  • never let them go trick or treating on their own – make sure that an adult stays with them at all times
  • make sure they only visit people known to your family
  • if there aren’t decorations or pumpkins outside someone’s house they’re probably not celebrating, so it’s best not to knock

If you have teenagers:

  • if there aren’t decorations or pumpkins outside someone’s house they’re probably not celebrating, so it’s best not to knock
  • make sure they are not going to be using alcohol or play a trick on someone using flour or eggs
  • make it clear that if a ‘no trick or treat’ sign is displayed, they should leave straight away
  • advise them to stay in a group and never go into the home of someone they don’t know
  • make sure they know not to frighten people
Need help?

Please only call 999 in an emergency. You can report a non-urgent incident or crime online

Family-friendly activities to enjoy in Edenbridge this summer

Did you know that 0-15 year olds make up around 20% of our local population here in Edenbridge? We’re proud of the fantastic facilities we offer for our young residents and the support/funding we provide to local groups and clubs that benefit them.

With summer holidays now here, we hope this serves as a great reminder of all the wonderful activities and opportunities available for young people in our town. Make this summer unforgettable with these family-friendly activities!

  • Explore scenic countryside walks along the Eden Valley – perfect for nature lovers.
  • Let the kids have a blast at local playgrounds and parks like Stangrove Park and the Recreation Ground with swings, slides, and plenty of space to run around.
  • Got older kids? Check out Blossoms Park skate park for some trick practice and socialising.
  • Pack a picnic and relax in the beautiful green spaces around town.
  • Find out what sporting opportunities there are at the Recreation Ground, home of Edenbridge Rugby Football Club
  • Visit Edenbridge Market on a Thursday. Little ones will love learning all the names of produce on the Fruit ‘n’ Veg stall and can help you pick up ingredients to do some baking at home.
  • Take a walk down the High Street and support our local, independent businesses, perhaps treating the family to an ice-cream
  • Come along to one of our free Family Fun Days – 1,8,15,22 August at Stangrove Park 2-5pm
  • Edenbridge Leisure Centre has swimming, sports, and fitness classes for all ages.
  • Don’t forget to check out other community places such as the Eden Centre and library, Eden Valley Museum, The Bridges Centre, churches and WI Hall for lots more goings-on and clubs.

Recreation Ground Pavilion enhanced with new windows and shutters

The Pavilion at the Recreation Ground, Lingfield Road, which is owned by the Town Council and home to Edenbridge Rugby Football Club, has had new windows, double window doors and electronic shutters fitted.

These enhancements have been funded by a CIL (Community Infrastructure Levy) grant. This is money the Town Council receives from developers to help fund certain infrastructure, facilities and services for the local community.

With Edenbridge’s rich history of sporting success, we hope these improvements will inspire future generations to get involved and stay active.

Thank you to specialist industrial door company Rite Doors for carrying out the works.

International Women’s Day – 8 March

This International Women’s Day we want to help #InspireInclusion by shining a light on Girlguiding in Edenbridge and the words of Anna Segall, Chief Executive of the World Association of Girl Guide and Girl Scouts:

These are just some of the important reasons why we are pleased to have awarded a community grant of over £500 to 1st Edenbridge Guides this year to help them run their activities. We would really encourage families to find out more about what girlguiding has to offer, either via the website www.girlguidingkentwest.co.uk/who-we-are/where-to-find-us/knole-division or www.facebook.com/GirlguidingKnoleDivision

“Girlguiding is slowly growing in Edenbridge,” says 1st Edenbridge Guides Leader, Steph Harrison. “We have just opened a new Brownie unit, and our Guide unit continues to grow.  This has only been possible with support from the community, and the girls who want to be part of Girlguiding. Our supporters include Edenbridge Town Council, who awarded us a grant of just over £500 this year, and have also supported us previously. This supports enables girls to participate in activities that help to grow their confidence, share new experiences, learn new skills and learn that Girls Can Do Anything!”

Brownies meet from 5.15 pm to 6.45 pm for girls age 7-10

Guides meet from 7 pm – 8.30 pm for girls age 10-15

Thursdays (term time only) at Rickards Hall

This information is from the Girlguiding website:

“Girls can do anything. We help them know that.”

We know that girls face pressures and expectations in every area of their lives. They’re limited by gender stereotypes, and they can face barriers to accessing the things they need to be happy.

Research shows that half of girls aged 14-17 believe that girls are more likely to experience negative gendered stereotypes than boys. And over a quarter of girls aged 14-17 have had a stereotype stop them from doing something.  Girls also tell us about the discrimination they face in their daily lives – our research shows that two thirds of girls aged 11 to 21 report seeing or experiencing sexism at school, college, university or work.

But we know that Girlguiding can help change this. Girls in Girlguiding are more confident than their peers: nearly 9 in 10 of them say they like being the way they are (compared with just 6 in 10 who have never been in Girlguiding).

Girlguiding offers a safe, inclusive space for all girls – one where they can try new things with friends they trust and volunteers they look up to.  This will give them courage, connections, confidence, and memories they’ll never forget. And when girls feel confident, they are more likely to know that they can do anything

Edenbridge Town Council welcomes first ever apprentice

Kai Day joins the Council’s Groundsteam as a Level 2 horticultural operative apprentice and will gain hands-on experience of looking after the town’s award-winning open spaces and sports pitches. He will help manage Edenbridge’s eight parks and greens, as well as five playgrounds, the Millennium Wood and Edenbridge Cemetery; learning skills such as grass cutting, refuse management, hedge and vegetation management, weeding, planting and sports pitch maintenance.

“I feel really pleased to have this opportunity of being the Town Council’s first apprentice and I’m looking forward to learning new skills,” said Kai.
“The team is very friendly and supportive and I believe I will learn a lot from their experience of grounds work through watching and interacting with them. I have grown up and lived in Edenbridge all my life so this makes me feel proud to look after grounds which people use frequently and to make the town have a nice environment.”

Head Groundsman, Craig Open, said: “We are really pleased to welcome Kai to the team and look forward to supporting him in his career development. We have lots of experience and skills within the team, so it’s rewarding to know that we can help guide the next generation of horticultural experts.”

Town Clerk, Caroline Leet, said: “As a Council we are keen to provide opportunities for all our staff, and this is especially exciting as we are supporting a young person to gain work skills and training through college. Apprenticeships are a great way for young people to gain professional qualifications as well as provide a way to earn while you learn, combining on-the-job training with off-the-job learning.

“Kai joins an award-winning team and will be learning from the best! Just earlier this year our Groundsteam were proud to receive two Silver-Gilt awards at the South & South East in Bloom Awards for Stangrove Park and Edenbridge Cemetery. The Council also achieved a ‘Good’ standard for all five of the football pitches at the Recreation Ground, Lingfield Road following a PitchPower assessment.” (Pitches are rated Good/Poor/Basic).

To find out more about apprenticeships, you can visit the government website: www.gov.uk/apply-apprenticeship

Council helps fund school play improvements

Two councillors at children's play area
They thought their playground days were over! Cllr Angela Baker and Cllr Alan Layland at Hever C of E Primary School

Cllr Angela Baker and Cllr Alan Layland were able to step out of the office last week and back in the playground to attend Hever C of E Primary School’s ‘Volunteer and Supporter Tea‘.

In 2022 the Town Council’s CIL Board awarded the school £24,659.72 towards its Longevity Project. The project aims to transform the functionality and all-weather usability of the outdoor areas by improving the ground and installing new play equipment and a children’s outdoor gym.

Cllr Baker said: “It is clearly evident to see how hard the PTA works in the school and what an amazing impact they have.
“It was a lovely afternoon hosted by the Year 6 class and a great opportunity to see the difference our grant has made towards the playground equipment and outdoor area. I’m sure the children really enjoy using the wonderful space that has been created.”

Cllr Layland added: “Over 80% of pupils at Hever School are Edenbridge residents, so I’m pleased that these improvements will benefit them and many others for years to come.”
