What was the Edenbridge and District Twinning Association?
It was an agency of Edenbridge Town Council. The Association was formed in 1973 “to promote friendship and understanding” between the people of Edenbridge, Kent and its surrounding villages and the people of Mont Saint Aignan in Normandy, France.
A copy of the original charter signed by the Mayor of Mont-Saint-Aignan and the Chairman of Edenbridge Town Council hangs in the Council Chamber in Doggetts Barn.
The Association arranged visits between the two towns at least twice a year, either staying with French families or hosting in their homes in Edenbridge.
During 2023 the 50th Anniversary was celebrated with two wonderful weekends. However, at the end of the year Edenbridge and District Association was formally closed. The 50 years of friendship with Mont Saint Aignan was something to be very proud of, and the links between the two towns still continue.
Edenbridge Town Council Chairman, Cllr Bob Todd, said: “The aims of the Charter linking our two towns – to develop mutual understanding and friendship – are as relevant today as they were in 1973. But times have changed, quite dramatically in the past few years, so sadly this is our last year of Twinning. Yet the connections between us will remain a lasting legacy and part of our history.”
