A tradition preserved by the Town Council

In 2021, Edenbridge Town Council took on the direct management of the town’s historic Thursday Charter Market, ensuring the continuation of this long-standing local tradition. The decision came after the previous market operator withdrew from its agreement with the Council, and no suitable external replacement could be found. Rather than see the market disappear, councillors stepped in to preserve and revitalise this important part of Edenbridge’s community life.

The market’s origins date back to the 13th century, when King Henry III granted a Charter to the Lord of the Manor, allowing a market to be held in the town. Over the centuries, it has remained a key feature of Edenbridge, providing residents and visitors with a place to shop, socialise, and support local traders.

Since taking over management, the Town Council has worked to increase the number and variety of stalls, enhance the market’s profile through signage, advertising, and social media, and ensure its ongoing success. To support this, a part-time Market Officer was appointed in 2022 to focus on expanding and promoting the market further.

Edenbridge Thursday Market continues to be a vibrant hub at the heart of the town, offering a wide range of goods and a welcoming atmosphere for all.

All traders are required to provide proof of public liability insurance or their Market Traders licence. They will have to adhere to the provisions to provide a safe, tidy stall area and comply with relevant legislation.

The Market Officer (or Council officers) conducts risk assessments for each new stall, along with weekly inspections and checks. The Market Risk Assessment is formally reviewed every quarter, with any changes at any time prompting a reassessment of the Annual Risk Assessment.

Declaration of Market Powers – Food Act 1984 Part III

Under the Council’s Declaration of Market Powers the Act enables us to use our powers to determine what market days we wants to use.

The Council supports local events and businesses and aims to facilitate, rather than hinder, the operation of markets and craft fairs. It uses its market powers to regulate and protect both existing and new markets. Therefore, any market operating within a six and three-quarter mile radius must formally seek the Council’s permission, as set out in our Market Licensing Policy
