On Thursday 8 May, Edenbridge came together to mark the 80th anniversary of VE Day with a day full of community spirit, remembrance, and celebration.

The day began with a morning ceremony at the town’s flagpole, where Council Chairman Cllr Bob Todd read the official Proclamation as the VE80 flag was raised. This was followed by the Last Post, performed by Julie Partridge of the Edenbridge Town Band, during which Barry Batchelor of the Royal British Legion lowered the Standard. Following a two-minute silence, Reveille was played and the Standard was raised again.

This solemn moment was attended by local councillors, residents and children from Edenbridge Primary School, reflecting the town’s shared respect and gratitude for those who served.

Later in the day, families enjoyed free giveaways including hats, pencils, balloons, and WWII glider planes – firm favourites with the younger visitors.

The evening brought the community together in Stangrove Park, where Edenbridge Town Band performed a medley of wartime songs and sing-along favourites. Their performance created a warm and nostalgic atmosphere as the sun set.

After the official D-Day hymn, Cllr Todd once again took centre stage to deliver the Proclamation before lighting the Beacon with added fireworks – a powerful tribute to the spirit of VE Day.

Our thanks go to the Edenbridge Bonfire Society for organising the beacon and fireworks, and to our Groundstaff and office team for their hard work throughout the day, including hosting a special afternoon tea for veterans and their families.

A special mention also to the Edenbridge Market traders, who joined in the spirit of the day and helped create a vibrant market atmosphere.

We’ve captured many special moments – browse our photo gallery below to revisit the day. Thank you to everyone who took part, supported, or simply came along. You made this commemoration truly meaningful.

Afternoon tea and poem

We have received many letters and cards of thanks for hosting the afternoon tea, which have all been gratefully received. One resident even wrote this lovely poem:

V E Day 80 years on

People need to be together,
we need to know each other,
to say ‘hello, how are you?’
when we’re walking down the street.
To wave, or smile, or speak,
when, wherever, else we meet.

This week has been a real gift,
for just that very need,
we’ve seen so many people,
and shared so many thoughts,
with memories of the ‘old days’
and how it used to be.

The peace has kept us happy,
relaxed, and we have lived,
enjoying every moment
without the fear of war.
We celebrate this week,
the day that peace came here.

No one ever needs to envy,
or fight another soul,
the world is here to share,
to share and share alike,
with love and kindness uppermost,
in all our thoughts and prayers.
