New playground opens in Edenbridge

The new playground at Recreation Ground Lingfield Road is now open!

The playground was officially opened with a ribbon cutting by Chairman Cllr Bob Todd on Thursday 16 June. Local children came to enjoy the new play equipment while meeting some of their favourite jungle friends.

With different areas for toddlers, older children and teens, the new area has been designed for children of all ages, physical and mental abilities. Children can enjoy walking along the sensory path, bouncing on the trampoline or tackling the mighty zip wire!

The project has been made possible thanks to money received from developers via the Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL)*.

Chairman of Edenbridge Town Council, Cllr Bob Todd, said: “We are thrilled to have been able to deliver this project as we know how important play is in the physical and mental development of young people. The last playground, which was installed in the late 90s, had a limited choice of activity and was becoming very dated. We now have a stimulating playground, with a choice of 23 activities to choose from, that we hope everyone will be proud of and can enjoy using for generations to come.”

The new playground offers a natural design that harmonises with the surrounding natural environment. It has been designed by HAGS®, a global manufacturer and installer of outdoor play areas. “Our team at HAGS were very excited to be awarded this fantastic refurbishment project. Our designer, Lucy Hammersley, has done a wonderful job reflecting the rural surroundings whilst packing the scheme full of vital play values and challenges for all ages and abilities of children. HAGS hope that the children of Edenbridge enjoy the new play area for many years to come”.

*The Community Infrastructure Levy is a charge which can be levied by local authorities on new development in their area. It is an important tool for Edenbridge Town Council as it helps us deliver the infrastructure needed to support development in our community.

Spring and Queen’s Jubilee bank holiday waste collections

Residents’ waste collections will take place on their usual day over the Spring and Jubilee bank holidays.

Sevenoaks District Council refuse collection crews will be working as usual on Thursday 2 and Friday 3 June 2022. Anyone who has a collection scheduled on these days should put their sacks out as normal.

There will be no changes to garden waste collections over the two bank holidays either.

Residents should put their black and clear sacks out at 7am and garden waste out at 6.30am on their collection day.

Cllr Margot McArthur, the Council’s Cabinet Member for Cleaner and Greener, says: “Our waste collection crews will be going the extra mile by working the two bank holidays so no one misses a collection. Thanks to the dedication of our staff, we’ve kept our bank holidays collection arrangements simple – residents just need to put their sacks and garden waste out on their usual day.”

Queen’s Platinum Jubilee event – 2 June, Stangrove Park, 7.00 pm with lighting of the Beacon 9.45 pm

EDENBRIDGE TOWN COUNCIL will be lighting a Beacon for The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee on the evening of Thursday, June 2, 2022, at Stangrove Park. The Council is making a celebration of this event with picnic in the park and activities starting from 7.00 pm, everyone is invited

The Beacon is one of over 2,022 being lit in the UK and the Commonwealth, and forms part of the official programme announced by Buckingham Palace for the Jubilee Weekend.

In addition, beacons will be lit in all 54 Commonwealth capitals and the Principal Beacon lighting will take place in a special ceremony at Buckingham Palace on Thursday evening. This will take the form of a lighting installation with The Queen’s Green Canopy ’Tree of Trees’ sculpture and projections onto the front of Buckingham Palace. This innovative new way of taking part in the beacon lighting will reflect the Royal Family’s long history championing environmental causes.

Bruno Peek LVO OBE OPR, Pageant Master of The Queen’s Jubilee Platinum Beacons said; “Building on a long tradition of lighting beacons to mark significant royal celebrations, thousands of beacons will be lit across the United Kingdom, the Commonwealth. They will enable local communities to join together to pay tribute to Her Majesty as part of the official programme of events.

“For the first time, town criers, pipers, buglets and choirs from the UK and the Commonwealth will come together to join in the celebrations in their own individual and special way. It is wonderful to see the range of support for beacon lighting, which will highlight both the diversity and unity of the nation and the Commonwealth. The Queen has lit up our lives for 70 years through her dedicated service and commitment. We would like to light up the nation and the Commonwealth in her honour.”

Edenbridge Town Council are proud to be part of this momentous celebration. It is only appropriate that this unique milestone in history is marked with beacons and music. We are honoured to be part of this special event for Her Majesty, The Queen’s 70th year as our Monarch and Head of the Commonwealth on her Platinum Jubilee.

The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Beacons and Associated Activities have been conceived and organised by Pageant Master Bruno Peek and his dedicated team.

Stangrove Park will be alive with music, there will be hotdogs, burgers from Scouts Jamboree, and bacon butties provided by Rotary Club, children’s best crown competition, and the Town Band will play from 8.30 pm. Bring a picnic and join in this celebration. For more information, please contact Edenbridge Town Council.
