Council to mark 80th anniversary of VJ Day (Victory over Japan)

The 80th anniversary of VJ Day (Victory over Japan) takes place on Friday 15 August 2025, commemorating the end of the Second World War.

While VE Day (Victory in Europe) marked the end of the war in Europe in May 1945, many thousands of Armed Forces personnel were still engaged in fighting in the Far East. Victory over Japan Day (VJ Day) marks the day Japan surrendered on 15 August 1945, which ended the Second World War.

Events will be held across the country – an opportunity for the nation to come together to honour and pay tribute to the Second World War generation from across the UK and Commonwealth.

Edenbridge commemoration – Friday 15 August, 8.45am

We will gather at the town’s flagpole (near Edenbridge Primary School) where a proclamation will be read, followed by the flag-raising and a two minute silence. Everyone is warmly invited to attend.

Council secures land at school entrance for new community garden

Edenbridge Town Council is delighted to announce that it is now the official owner of a small but significant piece of land located at the north end of the High Street, near the entrance to Edenbridge Primary School.

When the police station site was sold to developers and transformed into residential flats, one small plot of land remained unused. This particular piece couldn’t be incorporated into the development and with no operational need for it, the land had sat in limbo – until now.

Findley Design and Developments have gifted this land to the Council with a view to creating a community area.

We are pleased to share that this land has now been formally transferred to the Town Council, and we have plans to turn it into something special for the whole community.

A green space with purpose

The Council plans to create a modest feature garden on the site, including benches where residents can sit, relax, and connect. Importantly, the plot will continue to be the home of Edenbridge’s town flagpole, which is used to mark civic occasions, commemorations, and local celebrations throughout the year.

A symbol of civic pride

“This may be a small piece of land, but it holds great potential to bring value to our community,” said Council Chair, Cllr Angela Baker. “We’re proud to ensure it stays in public hands and can be enjoyed by all. It’s a lovely way to honour Edenbridge’s past while investing in our town’s future.”
